Collecting USA Security, SSD and SSI While Living In México

You can live in México and collect USA  Social Security.  You can have your monthly checks deposited in a bank in the USA, or you can have them deposited in a bank in México.

There are two kinds of Social Security Disability. SSD and SSI.

The SSD benefit is equal to full retirement Social Security without the age requirement. You can live in México while collecting SSD.  You can have your checks deposited in a USA bank or a Mexican bank.

SSI (Supplemental Security Income) is a Federal income supplement program funded by general tax revenues (not Social Security taxes).  It is designed to help aged, blind, and disabled people, who have little or no income. It provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter

Those receiving SSI Disability must reside in the United States. It is illegal to live outside the United States or its protectorates while collecting SSI.

There is a down side to having your checks (SS or SSD) direct deposited in a Mexican bank.  If the Social Security Administration knows you live in México, they will send you a verification letter each year.  You must sign and return the letter promptly.  If you don’t, your checks will stop until you straighten out the problem.  Personally, I would never trust the Mexican postal service with something so important.  I have my checks deposited in a USA bank, and I maintain an “official” address in the USA.
